Teeth Whitening Q & A

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening uses medical-grade solutions to remove stains and discoloration from the surfaces of your teeth. AppleTree Dental offers in-office, chairside teeth whitening with Zoom!.

Zoom! teeth whitening uses hydrogen peroxide gel to oxidize the molecules inside your tooth enamel. The oxidation process lightens the stains, making your smile appear significantly whiter and brighter.

Why do teeth change color?

Everyone experiences tooth discoloration because of the natural aging process. Daily biting and chewing can cause your enamel to wear down, making the yellow dentin beneath more visible.

Several other factors cause tooth stains as well, including:

  • Using tobacco
  • Practicing poor oral hygiene
  • Taking certain prescription medications
  • Experiencing oral trauma
  • Drinking beverages, such as coffee or black tea

Your diet can also cause tooth discoloration. For example, eating tomato-based sauces or curries can leave stains.

What does teeth whitening involve?

AppleTree Dental performs teeth whitening during a quick procedure in the dentist chair.

Your provider reviews your dental records and asks about your treatment goals. They also take digital X-rays and complete an oral exam, ensuring you have healthy teeth and gums.

Then, they cover your gums and lips with a protective sheet before applying the Zoom! whitening gel to the surfaces of your teeth. The solution sits for 15-20 minutes while your teeth absorb it.

Afterward, your provider points a special light at your teeth, causing a whitening reaction. They can complete the same steps several times until you’re happy with the results.

Most visits take an hour or less. There’s no recovery period, so you can immediately return to work and other normal activities.

How long do the results of teeth whitening last?

The time that teeth whitening lasts depends on various factors, including the severity of the stains and your commitment to practicing good oral hygiene.

Typically, teeth whitening results last between 3-4 months*, but you can extend your results by brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing regularly, and visiting AppleTree Dental for routine cleanings and oral exams. If you enjoy beverages, such as coffee or black tea, consider drinking them with a straw.
