Book OnlineWhat Are Veneers?
Veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain shells that are bonded to the front surfaces of your natural teeth. They cover cosmetic imperfections such as discoloration, pitting, and minor chips, instantly improving the appearance of your smile. Porcelain is durable, stain-resistant, and reflects light much like natural tooth enamel, so your results look bright and lifelike.
Cosmetic Issues Veneers Can Correct
At AppleTree Dental, Dr. Kang uses veneers to address a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:
- Broken and chipped teeth
- Severe discoloration and staining that doesn’t respond to whitening
- Gaps between teeth
- Smaller-than-average teeth
- Pointy or unusually shaped teeth
- Minor unevenness that affects smile symmetry
If your main concern is mild surface staining, professional teeth whitening may be a simpler first step. Dr. Kang will help you decide which option best fits your goals.
Are You a Candidate for Veneers?
Before recommending veneers, Dr. Kang reviews your dental records, performs a thorough oral exam, and takes digital X-rays to make sure your teeth and gums are healthy. Good candidates generally have healthy gums, enough natural enamel to support bonding, and realistic expectations about their results.
If you have crooked, crowded, or significantly misaligned teeth, Dr. Kang may recommend orthodontic treatment such as clear aligners first. Straightening your teeth before placing veneers can lead to a more conservative, longer-lasting result.
The Veneer Process at AppleTree Dental
Getting veneers at our Anaheim office typically takes two appointments scheduled about a week apart.
Visit One: Preparation and Digital Impressions
Dr. Kang begins by numbing the area with a local anesthetic. He then removes a very thin layer of enamel from each tooth, about one millimeter thick, to make room for the veneers. Next, he takes precise digital impressions using the Medit i500® intraoral scanner, which eliminates the need for messy traditional molds. These impressions are sent to a dental lab that designs and crafts your custom veneers.
Visit Two: Bonding Your Veneers
When your veneers are ready, you return to our office. After numbing the area, Dr. Kang bonds each veneer to the surface of your tooth, checks your bite, and polishes your smile. Before you leave, you’ll receive detailed care instructions.
Recovery After Getting Veneers
Most patients return to work and normal activities right away. You may notice mild tooth or gum sensitivity during the first 48 hours, but any discomfort typically fades quickly. Your veneers may also feel slightly rough in spots where excess bonding material remains. These areas usually wear down and smooth out within about a week.
How Long Do Veneers Last?
Veneers last 5-7 years* on average, and good habits can help extend their lifespan. To protect your investment, Dr. Kang recommends:
- Brushing twice daily and flossing regularly
- Visiting our office for routine cleanings and exams
- Avoiding nail-biting and chewing on hard objects
- Never using your teeth to open packaging
- Wearing a mouthguard during contact sports
If you grind or clench your teeth at night, a custom night guard can help protect your veneers from unnecessary wear.
